BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO INTEGRAL POLARITY PRACTICE

John Kesler has developed a meditation and awareness practice which he has named integral polarity practice (IPP). It is grounded in the big mind process, in which John was one of the first to be certified as a large group facilitator by Zen master, Genpo Roshi, the founder of the process. The big mind process enables a person to access non-dual awareness or big mind and other transcendent states of awareness through an application of voice dialogue, a Jungian therapeutic technique. John integrally informed the big mind process with developmental and other integral perspectives as well as other aspects drawn from other spiritual traditions particularly his own Mormon tradition. Ultimately, by John inhabiting a new world space created by all of the above, IPP essentially flowed out of him in the context of facilitating others and his own practice over a number of years. IPP makes no assertions that it is an exclusive path, but rather IPP provides a rich meditative and awareness practice which can complement any approach to life or spiritual practice.

IPP reflects an understanding of human psychology, eastern and western perspectives, and tantric practice which appears to be unique. As Ken Wilber the leading philosopher who has perhaps the most comprehensive grasp of the traditions of both East and West has commented:

There is nobody doing more leading-edge work on the integration of Eastern and Western approaches to consciousness and growth than John Kesler. His fully integral approach includes conventional and contemplative dimensions of psychology and spirituality, spanning body and mind and spirit and shadow, a truly remarkable and effective approach. I give his work my highest recommendation.

In addition John has explored and charted how aspects of energy and consciousness show up in archetypal polarities through the entire spectrum of human development. As Susanne Cook-Greuter, perhaps the leading researcher and scholar of higher ranges of human development has observed:

John Kesler has created the richest matrix that covers development through the whole spectrum of consciousness from birth through personal individuation into the heart of Big Mind. Kesler provides exquisite detail within an elegant and comprehensive structure. His polarity map illuminates the still points between polar opposites at 20 or so junctures along the way. By clarifying just what the fundamental tensions are he has deepened our understanding of human development and experience in a profound way.

Also very distinctive in this practice is the discovery of the same five themes which pervade every aspect and dimension of life experience. The five themes are physical / gross, relational / subtle, aware / causal, the ground out of which the three themes emerge, and their integrated expression. Through IPP life become an aesthetic experience of the integration, interpenetration and flow of the themes.

In any event IPP tends to be a practice which engages the person on multiple levels, triggering differentiation through more discriminating awareness and moving toward integration and transformation, with the impact over time of increasing awareness and capacity in multiple dimensions.

BIO: John was co-director of a non-denominational meditation center with Diane Hamilton and was director of the official meditation center for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.  He was a founding teacher of the Integral Spiritual Center and its successor organization, the Integral Life Spiritual Center.  John is a visiting teacher for I Evolve Global Practice Community and Pacific Integral.

In addition to sharing IPP, John is an attorney and social activist.  He writes, lectures and consults regarding integral approaches to social and political change.  John was a founding member of the politics section of the Integral Institute, and is founder and chair of the Salt Lake Center for Engaging Community, a non-profit which mentors communities on integral approaches to community flourishing in a global environment.

John and his wife currently serve as “service missionaries” in the inner city of Salt Lake City, for the Mormon Church working with those affected by abuse, gangs, drugs, homelessness and poverty.

Current World Events Through the Lenses of Integral Theory & Spiral Dynamics

Posted: July 2nd, 2010

Summer Discussion Series at Boulder Integral

Beginning Tuesday, 7/13th
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, July through September
7pm – 9pm
Donation Encouraged – $5 per session

If you’ve been wondering about how to put recent world events, such as the current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, into a broader and deeper perspective, so have we!

Let’s really get into the difficult discussions! Let’s really dive deep!

Through a summer discussion series beginning Tuesday, July 13th, we’ll attempt to do just that. Join us for an ongoing facilitated conversation on how we can view current world events through the lenses of Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics. Rather than trying to “fix” the world’s problems or react against them, a broader, integral perspective can help identify their deeper causes and cultures on a systemic level. Potential evolutionary solutions may then emerge from that point of view.

What’s required is a basic knowledge of Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, and optionally, the cultural mapping system of Spiral Dynamics as presented by Don Beck. These gatherings will not serve as an educational class for these philosophical systems, but rather as a medium for sharing viewpoints and engaging interactively around these themes. Facilitation will be provided to maintain the conversational focus on an integral perspective.

  • Beginning July 13th, meetings will continue every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month through September.
  • These ongoing discussions will be held on a drop-in basis, with a requested $5 donation per session.
  • If you have questions, please contact info@boulderintegral.org

The Guru and the Pandit: Andrew Cohen & Ken Wilber at Boulder Integral

Posted: June 24th, 2010

Radical Dialogues on Enlightenment and the Evolution of Consciousness

Join us at Boulder Integral for a Q&A with evolutionary enlightenment pioneer Andrew Cohen and renowned integral philosopher Ken Wilber on evolution of consciousness and culture. For most of you finding yourself on this page, you will be familiar with “The Guru and the Pandit” series on What Is Enlightenment? magazine. If you have not heard of this before, click here to read some archives.

Many of the most significant leaps in human development have been achieved by those rare individuals—creative men and women—who have dared to step beyond the confines of the status quo to create something novel, uplifting, and extraordinary. Less renowned, perhaps, are the evolutionary advances that have been achieved by a creative duo—a pair of individuals working together, comrades and colleagues, who are driven by a shared passion to change the world for the better.

Andrew Cohen, spiritual teacher, and Ken Wilber, spiritual philosopher, are such a team. Mapping the evolving edge of human potential and exploring the states and stages of consciousness, they function like a spiritualized fusion of Watson & Crick and Lewis & Clark, seeking to discern the deepest structures of human nature while continually pressing forward into new and uncharted terrain.

Progress and Purpose in Evolution: A Talk by Steve McIntosh

Posted: June 24th, 2010

Come join us for an evening with author Steve McIntosh as he discusses his forthcoming book on the meaning and value of evolution.  Mark your calendars: Thu. 8/5 at 7pm at Boulder Integral.

He argues that evolution is not random, accidental, or otherwise meaningless. On the contrary, its progressive advance reveals the presence of purpose. Not a preplanned or externally controlled type of purpose, but rather a creative generation of value that has been continually building upon itself for billions of years. When understood in its entirety, from the flaring forth of the big bang, through the emergence of our solar system, through the evolution of life, and up through the development of human society and culture, the grand panoply of evolution carries an unmistakably spiritual message. And despite its vigorous use as a weapon against spirituality, as our understanding of evolution deepens, we will increasingly come to see it as a profound and sacred teaching in its own right. Although most of the evolutionary science that provides the foundation of this discussion has been around for decades, it is only in the last few years that we have begun to grasp evolution in its fullness. And this new conception has resulted from the enlarged understanding of the cultural or psychosocial aspects of evolution brought about by the recent insights of integral philosophy.

STEVE MCINTOSH, J.D., is the author of Integral Consciousness and the Future of Evolution (Paragon House, 2007). He was an original member of the Integral Institute, and a member of the Evolutionary Leaders group spearheaded by Deepak Chopra. EnlightenNext Magazine has referred to him as “integral thinker par excellence.” An honors graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and the University of Southern California Business School, McIntosh is founder and president of the international manufacturing company Now & Zen, Inc. He lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and two sons. Visit his website at www.stevemcintosh.com.

When: Every Tuesday/Thursday nights (if there is a change in the schedule, you will be informed in advance)
STARTING ON: Thursday, June 10th

Time: 5:45-7pm

Where: Boulder Integral (BI)

Who: anyone over the age of 14

Space is limited to 15 students. Please RSVP to info@boulderintegral.org to reserve your space.

Becoming more focused in our life allows us to better reach our dreams and to manifest our passions.  An integrated martial arts practice can help you bring greater focus and discipline to all areas of your life, while learning to create and sustain healthy boundaries in your relationships.

These classes will include an integrated curriculum of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Chi Gong, Self Defense, and Psychological Strength:

CLASS STRUCTURE:

Kung Fu

This will include traditional Northern Shaolin Kung Fu:

  • Empty Hands Training – stances, strikes, kicks, blocks, and over 12 long forms between the Beginner and the Advanced Level.
  • Weapons Training – traditional weapons: broad sword, straight sword, and staff.
  • Fight Sets – fight other students in choreographed movements that teach how Kung Fu is adapted to the street.

Proper breathing techniques, control, ‘spot’ hitting, and the development of the right mindset are all integrated into your training, along with the four major fields of study below.

Chi Gong
You will learn to recognize, cultivate, and employ Yin and Yang energies in your body and through your Kung Fu forms.

Self Defense
Adapting your Kung Fu techniques to the real world is an important part of training.  You will be trained to fight against other students, against street fighters, and against senior students.  You will learn to control your opponent in any situation by learning to control yourself.

Psychological Strength
Beating someone in combat is seldom about the physical skill level of the fighters.  Your mental mindset is by far the most powerful tool you can develop and cultivate to create boundaries that other people will not dream of crossing — in the ring, in the office, on the streets, with your family and loved ones.

Rinzai Zen Meditation
Meditation was always an integral part of Shaolin training, and in China the temples focused on Chan Buddhism, which later became better known in Japan as Zen.  Chan Buddhism has all but died out in China, but the Japanese have kept the warrior tradition within mediation alive. Taking your seat fearlessly, in utter stillness, and with an open heart will be part of your training.

Testing and Levels
There are 10 levels in this training, and each level requires that a student be tested on the material they have learned to move onto the next level.

TEACHING METHOD

Boulder, CO has many strengths, but a sharp and clear lineage of spiritual and physical discipline, taught in an uncompromising way, is not one of them.  While emotional processing, the honoring of all perspectives, and go-at-your-own pace models all serve our emerging, post-conventional selves, they can be toxic to the transformational path.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTION

Keith Martin-Smith is the only lineage holder of Grandmaster Jong Hoon Jeon.  He has been studying Shaolin and Northern style Kung Fu since 1994.  Before training under Master Jeon, Mr. Martin-Smith studied under the Venerable Shi Yan Ming, 34th Generation Shaolin monk, in New York City, and under the Iron Palm Master Brian Grey before that.

Keith became a formal disciple of Master Jeon in 2001, meaning he agreed to be trained in the very demanding and very traditional manner reserved for the most serious of students.  In 2002 he was awarded the title of Kyu Bum Nim (senior instructor) and permitted to teach on his own.  Keith ran Master Jeon’s Philadelphia school from 2002-2005, leading 9 classes a week. In 2008 he was elevated to a formal lineage holder and to a co-master.  In addition to Shaolin Kung Fu, Keith has also trained in Jin Woo (Jing Wu), Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and Jingui Qi Gong.

In 1996, he began studying the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) and took Empowerment and Bodhisattva Vows with Lama Tsering Everest in 2001.  In 2007 he met Jun Po Denis Kelly Roshi and became a formal student of his, and was given the Dharma name “Kogen” (“Tiger Eye”).  Keith/Kogen has been authorized by Jun Po Roshi to teach Rinzai Zen meditation and has been awarded the title of sensei.  He uses his Japanese dharma name, Kogen, when teaching as well as the Japanese word for teacher, sensei (the Chinese word is sifu, a combination of “teacher” and “father”).

“What is better, satisfying 1,000 desires or conquering one?”

INTEGRAL FRAME

An absolutistic (Amber) frame for teaching has been used for millennia in spiritual and physical disciplines, but has been increasingly abandoned as we moved into modernity (Orange) and postmodernity (Green).  But we are seeing in places like Boulder, CO, some of the problems when one throws out the Amber, hierarchical frame for teaching: namely, it simple is the most effective way to create change.  This is because Amber is wonderful at helping to break the body and the mind into a difficult discipline.  Orange interpretations of these disciplines can focus too much on the status and ranking of the student, while Green interpretations are, among other problems, reluctant to force one kind of training and philosophy onto students.  The result of the loss of Amber teaching methods applied to marital arts and spiritual practice has been a reduction in the quality of students and of their overall competency.

We can add Orange and Green emergent truths and understandings into pre-and-post practice structures, to honor the insights of those worldviews.  But putting those structures into the Amber frame destroys the pressure that Amber has been so carefully formatted to create, and lengthens the entire process when it doesn’t destroy it utterly.

Testimonial

For the past 4 weeks I’ve been introduced to Hollow Bones Shaolin Kung Fu by Kogan / Keith.

My 9 years of previous martial arts practice led me to ask Keith some penetrating questions about his teaching methods, which he answered comfortably. Being in 8 classes so far, and seeing 2 other students with 2 years previous exposure to Keith, has only reinforced my expectations.

Keith has high integrity, is focused on tradition, and moves the class along with an interesting variety of strength and flexibility development, form, fighting moves, breathing techniques and meditation.  At the same time he is closely aware of each student’s abilities and limitations.

I’m looking forward to mental, spiritual and physical growth as classes continue, and can assure potential students of tough workouts and good fun.

Student, Cliff Shaffran

Engaging the Future: Leading in Turbulent Times

Posted: May 21st, 2010

July 9-11, 2010

Tom Curren, John Kelly, Allison Conte

Participant panel discussion with Jeff Salzman and Terry Patten

What is the “New Normal?”

How Will We Adapt to It?

Can We Find a Way to Thrive?

Engaging the Future is an exceptional opportunity to boldly explore the economic, social, and environmental breakdowns and breakthroughs that might occur over the next 10 years – and develop the courage, agility, and resiliency needed to address them.

.
Why engage the future? Isn’t it beyond my control?

We live in an adaptive world, learning from and adjusting to challenges and crises. The 2008 financial crisis, Katrina, and 9/11 continue to be the subject of analysis and reform. We are wiser for these experiences.

But the pace of new shocks to our economic, environmental, and social systems—combined with known but unaddressed systemic issues, and unknown or unintended consequences of our actions—could limit our capacity to respond and adapt in ways that help us to achieve individual, organizational, and societal goals.

Consider both the likelihood and impact over the next 10 years of:

  • at least one natural disaster the magnitude of Katrina
  • at least one financial crisis the magnitude of the 2008 credit collapse and subsequent recession
  • one or more terrorist attacks that, unlike the Times Square truck bomb, might be successful

We don’t need to predict the specifics to consider that the level of challenge ahead may be unprecedented. Even exciting technological and medical breakthroughs have complex implications for our culture. This “new normal” may test our resiliency and stretch our resources. Without an augmented set of perspectives, capabilities and approaches, we might simply find ourselves “in over our heads.”

Workshop description

Engaging the Future is designed to enhance your ability to:

  • Overcome denial and paralysis to engage the future with eyes wide open
  • See the full range of challenges approaching and weigh their potential impact
  • Access the ideas, practices, and resources that could help mitigate their effects
  • Make the necessary personal, social, and business adaptations that will make possible a better future

Our mission, which we invite you to join, is to take a balanced view of the future and to create (within realistic constraints) a better version of what could happen than the “age of darkness” that some people understandably fear. We stand for the possibility that breakthroughs are as likely, and perhaps more powerful, than breakdowns.

In this scenario-based laboratory, we will work in teams to explore multiple perspectives on what might occur in the next 10 years. And we’ll take a deep look at the emotional, psychological and cultural patterns that can limit – or enhance – our ability to think and act with creativity and courage.

In this pragmatic process, you’ll learn specific tools and important skills to help you to increase agility and resiliency in your organization or in your community, and begin thinking about how to apply these approaches in your personal life.

Register

In this workshop you will:

  • Engage in a scenario process developed by leading experts, and co-create “stories from the future”
  • Make sense of confusing trends
  • Learn to work with complexity, paradox, and ambiguity
  • Develop insight and foresight around unintended consequences of actions that you, your organization, and society might undertake
  • Avoid the decision traps and biases that even the most senior executives make
  • Shift from predicting-the-future to sensing-and-responding in a dynamic way
  • Practice a new decision-making process that integrates multiple perspectives to create effective solutions to difficult issues
  • Discover sources of personal efficacy, resiliency, and adaptability

The pilot program, designed to address the concerns of top executives, is open to the public in July 2010. The invitation to join us—a $2,000 value—is a special one-time offer to participate in this groundbreaking event.

Join us for a neurofeedback demonstration and Practice eliciting meditative brain wave states – in minutes.

Neurofeedback brain computer interface technology provides a very powerful feedback loop that confirms for the Practitioner what a meditative brain wave state FEELS LIKE. Practitioners can find and target that FEELING at any time anywhere. The MindSet, made by NeuroSky, enables the student to learn how to identify their alpha and theta brain wave states entering and staying in these states for extended periods of time. The student, with Practice over time, learns to elicit these healthy brain wave states without relying on the MindSet. No matter where you are you can find and relax into a meditative state anytime.

Join us to see, feel, hear and experience alpha and theta brain wave states. You won’t have to wonder if you are achieving meditative brain waves states any longer.

THE PRESENTERS

Eric Knouse
By surrendering himself to internal guidance, Eric Knouse, founder of The Practice, discovered a way to access deep levels of meditation — alpha and theta brain waves states,– and in the process, created a simple and straightforward way to teach others to do the same. The Practice course focuses on the scientific aspects of mind/body chemistry as well as meditative techniques using state-of-the-art neurofeedback technology.

For those who have ignored meditation or who have tried it unsuccessfully, this course provides new insights explaining why the daily practice of meditation can provide a great antidote to today’s stressful living. Eric has discovered a natural and reliable way to access inner states of awareness. Access is gained through dedicated practice involving body posture, breathing, and focused attention and non-attention through Practicing neurofeedback.

Liberation Economics is based on the belief that we no longer need to choose between having a well paying job or one that is fulfilling. It is possible to have both the means and the meaning. But we can’t do it alone. The good news is that we’re not alone, and we all want the same thing.

The purpose of Liberation Economics is to facilitate the emergence of a practice community that collaborates, supports, and even relies on each other to co-create opportunities for all members to make a living through living our purpose.

Join us at Boulder Integral on June 12-13th to catalyze the emergence of this community.

Meet the panel
