Beginning Tuesday, 7/13th
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, July through September
7pm – 9pm
Donation Encouraged – $5 per session

If you’ve been wondering about how to put recent world events, such as the current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, into a broader and deeper perspective, so have we!
Let’s really get into the difficult discussions! Let’s really dive deep!
Through a summer discussion series beginning Tuesday, July 13th, we’ll attempt to do just that. Join us for an ongoing facilitated conversation on how we can view current world events through the lenses of Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics. Rather than trying to “fix” the world’s problems or react against them, a broader, integral perspective can help identify their deeper causes and cultures on a systemic level. Potential evolutionary solutions may then emerge from that point of view.
What’s required is a basic knowledge of Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, and optionally, the cultural mapping system of Spiral Dynamics as presented by Don Beck. These gatherings will not serve as an educational class for these philosophical systems, but rather as a medium for sharing viewpoints and engaging interactively around these themes. Facilitation will be provided to maintain the conversational focus on an integral perspective.

Join us at Boulder Integral for a Q&A with evolutionary enlightenment pioneer Andrew Cohen and renowned integral philosopher Ken Wilber on evolution of consciousness and culture. For most of you finding yourself on this page, you will be familiar with “The Guru and the Pandit” series on What Is Enlightenment? magazine. If you have not heard of this before, click here to read some archives.
Many of the most significant leaps in human development have been achieved by those rare individuals—creative men and women—who have dared to step beyond the confines of the status quo to create something novel, uplifting, and extraordinary. Less renowned, perhaps, are the evolutionary advances that have been achieved by a creative duo—a pair of individuals working together, comrades and colleagues, who are driven by a shared passion to change the world for the better.
Andrew Cohen, spiritual teacher, and Ken Wilber, spiritual philosopher, are such a team. Mapping the evolving edge of human potential and exploring the states and stages of consciousness, they function like a spiritualized fusion of Watson & Crick and Lewis & Clark, seeking to discern the deepest structures of human nature while continually pressing forward into new and uncharted terrain.

Becoming more focused in our life allows us to better reach our dreams and to manifest our passions. An integrated martial arts practice can help you bring greater focus and discipline to all areas of your life, while learning to create and sustain healthy boundaries in your relationships.
These classes will include an integrated curriculum of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Chi Gong, Self Defense, and Psychological Strength:
CLASS STRUCTURE:
Kung Fu
This will include traditional Northern Shaolin Kung Fu:
Proper breathing techniques, control, ‘spot’ hitting, and the development of the right mindset are all integrated into your training, along with the four major fields of study below.
Chi Gong
You will learn to recognize, cultivate, and employ Yin and Yang energies in your body and through your Kung Fu forms.
Self Defense
Adapting your Kung Fu techniques to the real world is an important part of training. You will be trained to fight against other students, against street fighters, and against senior students. You will learn to control your opponent in any situation by learning to control yourself.
Psychological Strength
Beating someone in combat is seldom about the physical skill level of the fighters. Your mental mindset is by far the most powerful tool you can develop and cultivate to create boundaries that other people will not dream of crossing — in the ring, in the office, on the streets, with your family and loved ones.
Rinzai Zen Meditation
Meditation was always an integral part of Shaolin training, and in China the temples focused on Chan Buddhism, which later became better known in Japan as Zen. Chan Buddhism has all but died out in China, but the Japanese have kept the warrior tradition within mediation alive. Taking your seat fearlessly, in utter stillness, and with an open heart will be part of your training.
Testing and Levels
There are 10 levels in this training, and each level requires that a student be tested on the material they have learned to move onto the next level.
TEACHING METHOD
Boulder, CO has many strengths, but a sharp and clear lineage of spiritual and physical discipline, taught in an uncompromising way, is not one of them. While emotional processing, the honoring of all perspectives, and go-at-your-own pace models all serve our emerging, post-conventional selves, they can be toxic to the transformational path.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTION
Keith Martin-Smith is the only lineage holder of Grandmaster Jong Hoon Jeon. He has been studying Shaolin and Northern style Kung Fu since 1994. Before training under Master Jeon, Mr. Martin-Smith studied under the Venerable Shi Yan Ming, 34th Generation Shaolin monk, in New York City, and under the Iron Palm Master Brian Grey before that.
Keith became a formal disciple of Master Jeon in 2001, meaning he agreed to be trained in the very demanding and very traditional manner reserved for the most serious of students. In 2002 he was awarded the title of Kyu Bum Nim (senior instructor) and permitted to teach on his own. Keith ran Master Jeon’s Philadelphia school from 2002-2005, leading 9 classes a week. In 2008 he was elevated to a formal lineage holder and to a co-master. In addition to Shaolin Kung Fu, Keith has also trained in Jin Woo (Jing Wu), Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and Jingui Qi Gong.
In 1996, he began studying the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) and took Empowerment and Bodhisattva Vows with Lama Tsering Everest in 2001. In 2007 he met Jun Po Denis Kelly Roshi and became a formal student of his, and was given the Dharma name “Kogen” (“Tiger Eye”). Keith/Kogen has been authorized by Jun Po Roshi to teach Rinzai Zen meditation and has been awarded the title of sensei. He uses his Japanese dharma name, Kogen, when teaching as well as the Japanese word for teacher, sensei (the Chinese word is sifu, a combination of “teacher” and “father”).
“What is better, satisfying 1,000 desires or conquering one?”
INTEGRAL FRAME
An absolutistic (Amber) frame for teaching has been used for millennia in spiritual and physical disciplines, but has been increasingly abandoned as we moved into modernity (Orange) and postmodernity (Green). But we are seeing in places like Boulder, CO, some of the problems when one throws out the Amber, hierarchical frame for teaching: namely, it simple is the most effective way to create change. This is because Amber is wonderful at helping to break the body and the mind into a difficult discipline. Orange interpretations of these disciplines can focus too much on the status and ranking of the student, while Green interpretations are, among other problems, reluctant to force one kind of training and philosophy onto students. The result of the loss of Amber teaching methods applied to marital arts and spiritual practice has been a reduction in the quality of students and of their overall competency.
We can add Orange and Green emergent truths and understandings into pre-and-post practice structures, to honor the insights of those worldviews. But putting those structures into the Amber frame destroys the pressure that Amber has been so carefully formatted to create, and lengthens the entire process when it doesn’t destroy it utterly.
Testimonial
For the past 4 weeks I’ve been introduced to Hollow Bones Shaolin Kung Fu by Kogan / Keith.
My 9 years of previous martial arts practice led me to ask Keith some penetrating questions about his teaching methods, which he answered comfortably. Being in 8 classes so far, and seeing 2 other students with 2 years previous exposure to Keith, has only reinforced my expectations.
Keith has high integrity, is focused on tradition, and moves the class along with an interesting variety of strength and flexibility development, form, fighting moves, breathing techniques and meditation. At the same time he is closely aware of each student’s abilities and limitations.
I’m looking forward to mental, spiritual and physical growth as classes continue, and can assure potential students of tough workouts and good fun.
Student, Cliff Shaffran

Our evolutionary emergency calls each of us, personally, to something truly new. Old ways of thinking, including old forms of philosophy, spirituality, activism, and entrepreneurialism are insufficient. A new Integral Evolutionary orientation is called for, one that integrates the best of leading edge philosophical insight, spiritual depth, social activism, and entrepreneurial innovation. But it’s just beginning to emerge — how do we open up to, connect with, and co-create this new emergent conscious leadership?
If you’re hungry for a deeper Integral conversation — this evening’s for you. It will be a passionate and original exploration, right “on the edge” of what is currently emerging in the Integral and Evolutionary communities.
Terry will express his connection with this electrifying emergent consciousness, clarity, power, and passion that is now finding new Integral and Evolutionary forms. We’ll make direct energetic contact with the impulse of evolution itself, the rational and trans-rational spiritual initiation of our time. And we’ll experience how this can inspire and empower us to live life on a higher octave.
We can align ourselves to something greater than ourselves that can help us meet life authentically and effectively, free and happy, optimistic and grounded, committed and realistic, even as we confront what sometimes seem like the most sobering circumstances.
Terry Patten is a vital, leading voice in the fields of integral evolutionary practice, leadership and spirituality. He speaks and consults internationally, inspiring, challenging, and connecting Integral evolutionary leaders and institutions worldwide. A gifted communicator, community-builder, successful entrepreneur, and author of four books, Terry has worked for over three decades as a philosopher, activist, coach, consultant, and teacher, helping leaders embody higher consciousness in practical actions that transform complex systems. He is the author, with Ken Wilber, of Integral Life Practice. His personal web site is www.integralheart.com.

Sexuality in all its forms is so important to life and relationships that it often becomes a central focus of psychotherapy—thus transforming the work into “sex therapy.” Integrally Informed sex therapy—orienting from quadrants, lines, levels, states, and types—involves therapists attuning to clients’ sexuality from multiple perspectives to resolve problems, enhance intimacy, and increase erotic fulfillment.
In America, sex therapy hit the mainstream when William Masters and Virginia Johnson scientifically researched and openly discussed sexual anatomy, physiology, problems, and solutions in the 1960’s. Masters’ and Johnson’s language of dysfunction and function led to 70’s and 80’s models emphasizing education, conflict resolution, and differentiation. All these approaches have been increasingly informed and aided by tantric practices which have migrated from Eastern wisdom traditions to become progressively more mainstream in the West. An Integrally informed model adds to this rich mix a balanced consideration of universal drives, themes, and relationships, existing on genetic, physiological, social, interpersonal, yogic, and spiritual levels.
We each express masculine and feminine aspects and essence—embodied in different combinations—at work, within relationships, and erotically. Lovers generate intersubjective fields which morph and change depending on levels of conditioning, states of consciousness, relationship, and culture. In therapy, common problems like diminished arousal, infidelity, and sexual shame, are often gateways to the deeper waters of personal and relational development.
Our nature is to love, and yearn for love. We suffer when not true to our authentic nature. We have all ached for erotic fulfillment—yearned to embody erotic transformational bliss. These dimensions include and transcend traditional sex therapy goals such as keeping an erection ten minutes longer or having an extra orgasm. An Integrally informed approach embraces myriad conditions and alternatives, collectively reaching for intimacy and unity through the pleasures and demands of sexuality.
Join Dr. Witt in exploring sexual nature, expression, fulfillment, distress, and healing.

Evolutionary Spirituality is about right relationship with reality. When we are not aligned with reality, we suffer, and so do those around us. To “Evolutionize Your Life” means to follow where your joy and the world’s needs intersect — pursuing your evolutionary calling — while growing in deep integrity.
During this dynamic multimedia program, Michael will discuss proven deep integrity practices that work for people of all religious and philosophical perspectives.
In this evening program we will learn how to grow in “deep integrity” by appreciating our inherited instincts for how they served our human and prehuman ancestors, while channeling our most compelling bodily and emotional urges in ways that are life-giving for today and tomorrow. As we grow in trust, authenticity, responsibility, and service — the very purpose of the spiritual path — we gain the promises of religion in this life. The freedom we thereby discover clears us to devote our energies toward evolutionary ends.
Rev. Michael Dowd is one of the most inspiring speakers in America today. He is the author of Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World, which has been endorsed by five Nobel laureates and other leading scientists, including noted skeptics, and by religious leaders across the spectrum. He and his wife, Connie Barlow, a noted science writer, have spoken to 1,000+ groups since launching their itinerant ministry in 2002. At home in both liberal and conservative settings, and uniquely gifted at building bridges between religious and non-religious people, Michael shares the 14-billion-year Epic of Evolution in ways that uplift and expand heart, mind, and soul. His passion is showing how an evolutionary understanding of human nature can inspire and empower each of us to live with greater integrity, joy, and zest for life. Find out more about Michael at www.thankgodforevolution.com
Connie Barlow is an acclaimed author of popular science books and articles, and developer of The Great Story website. Connie’s most recent book, The Ghosts of Evolution (Basic Books), was Amazon.com’s top-recommended science book for several months in 2001. Her previous books, Green Space, Green Time: The Way of Science (Copernicus Books), Evolution Extended: Biological Debates on the Meaning of Life (MIT Press), and From Gaia to Selfish Genes: Selected Writings in the Life Sciences, all explore the nexus of science, spirit, and meaning (check out all of Connie’s books here). She is founding member and webmaster of Torreya Guardians, an internet community of botanists, naturalists, and others dedicated to ensuring the continuing persistence in the wild of America’s most endangered conifer tree: Torreya taxifolia. The June 2008 issue of Orion Magazine included an in-depth article on “assisted migration” for this highly endangered tree, featuring Connie’s leadership in this effort.
Connie is a Unitarian Universalist, and a well-known developer of curricula for children’s religious education programs. Since 2002, she and her husband (Rev. Michael Dowd) have lived entirely on the road, as “America’s evolutionary evangelists”. Find out more about Connie Barlow here.
Thank God for Evolution presents in a lively and accessible manner the reasons why it is now possible to view evolution as a call to deep integrity; how a dozen scientific disciplines reveal evolution to be measurably creative, rather than meaningless blind chance; practical methods for using evolutionary insights to achieve greater joy and personal fulfillment; and how aligning with evolutionary trends can guide activists and others hoping to make our world a better place. As a Christian minister, Dowd especially addresses the concerns that Christians have about evolution, but this book contains insights that will appeal to all people of faith and of no faith. Fun and uplifting, Thank God for Evolution goes beyond the current debate to offer up a whole new way of thinking about science and religion.
Endorsements for Thank God for Evolution, by Michael Dowd
“The science vs. religion debate is over. Michael Dowd masterfully unites rationality and spirituality in a world view that celebrates the mysteries of existence and inspires each human being to achieve a higher purpose in life. A must read for all, including scientists.” – Craig Mello (2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine)
“Dowd shows that there are many ways to be a spiritual person and that all of them are enriched by an understanding of modern science, especially evolution. This is a creative, provocative book that sheds light on just about any spiritual path one might be on. Many will find their faith revolutionized.” —Eugenie C. Scott, Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education
“In Thank God for Evolution Michael Dowd has produced a thoughtful, timely, challenging-and readable-synthesis of science and spirituality. This compelling book is the product of candid reflection on the religious and ethical significance of evolution and contemporary cosmology in the spirit of Thomas Berry and Teilhard de Chardin. The author’s generosity of soul and depth of ecological concern have allowed him to create a challenging spiritual vision out of an exceptionally wide variety of sources.” – John F. Haught, Professor of Theology, Georgetown University; Author of Deeper Than Darwin; Christianity and Science; And is Nature Enough?
“Michael Dowd has written a book that is at once fun to read and a significant contribution to those who think about God without the blindfolds of past centuries. Dowd affirms science, and shows how a spiritually alive consciousness must embrace evolution and understand it in the wider context of a world filled with the presence of God. It will be faith renewing to many Christians and has much from which people of all faiths can learn.” —RABBI MICHAEL LERNER, EDITOR OF TIKKUN, NATIONAL CHAIR OF THE NETWORK OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESSIVES, AUTHOR OF THE LEFT HAND OF GOD
“Michael Dowd is one of my heroes… I’m pleased to see more and more people address the patterns of human emergence. Michael has made a significant contribution to understanding this critical aspect of human nature.” —DON BECK, CO-FOUNDER OF THE NATIONAL VALUES CENTER, CEO OF SPIRAL DYNAMICS GROUP

A popular view of human mentality outlines a continuum running from unconscious through subsconscious to waking consciousness. In contrast, many metaphysical belief systems often acknowledge this a valuable place to start but find this model to be limited and shortsighted. Instead, they propose further layers of consciousness that transcend the simplistic reductionist model. The term “meta-consciousness” captures this further layer of consciousness. Most metaphysical systems offer only immediate, subjective experience as evidence for meta-consciousness. To verify the existence of meta-consciousness, the experiencer must undertake some kind of “path” or “journey” to enlightenment.
Only after much progress — or often not until final completion of the journey — can an initiate verify for him or herself that such a level of meta-consciousness actually exists. Many systems claim to produce enlightenment, but not all of these claims turn out to be legitimate. Unsurprisingly, honest seekers often find themselves reluctant merely on the testimony of others to engage in a process that might in the end yield nothing but ashes. Many doubt such a transcendent realm of meta-consciousness even exists. But good objective evidence exists for meta-consciousness. One can find this evidence in the recent, well-conducted scientific research into extra-sensory perception, or ESP. How ESP evidences meta-consciousness, and what we can learn because of it, is the subject of this presentation. You will even have the opportunity to try it yourselves in a simple experiment.
