An Experiential Talk and Practice
Tuesday November 2rd at 6:30pm- 8:30pm
Suggested donation $15
Venue: Boulder Integral, 2805 Broadway Street, Boulder, CO 80304
What is the Relationship between Mantra and Koan on the Spiritual Path?
Kōans reflect an Enlightened State designed to shock the mind into sudden Awareness. ["What is Buddha?" a monk asked. "Three pounds of flax!", Master Dongshan replied.]
Mantras are sounds or groups of words that can create transformation.
How can contemplating koans or reciting mantras relate to realizing your true nature? How do they differ? What does it feel like to gain insight from one versus the other?
Jun Po Denis Kelly Roshi, 83rd Patriarch of the Rinzai Zen school, will explore this in a lively, hands-on, and deeply experiential talk, meditation, and Q&A at Boulder Integral. Climb inside two of Buddhism’s most powerful vehicles for transformation! Find out more about Jun Po Roshi here.

Beginning Tuesday, 7/13th
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, July through September
7pm – 9pm
Donation Encouraged – $5 per session

If you’ve been wondering about how to put recent world events, such as the current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, into a broader and deeper perspective, so have we!
Let’s really get into the difficult discussions! Let’s really dive deep!
Through a summer discussion series beginning Tuesday, July 13th, we’ll attempt to do just that. Join us for an ongoing facilitated conversation on how we can view current world events through the lenses of Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics. Rather than trying to “fix” the world’s problems or react against them, a broader, integral perspective can help identify their deeper causes and cultures on a systemic level. Potential evolutionary solutions may then emerge from that point of view.
What’s required is a basic knowledge of Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, and optionally, the cultural mapping system of Spiral Dynamics as presented by Don Beck. These gatherings will not serve as an educational class for these philosophical systems, but rather as a medium for sharing viewpoints and engaging interactively around these themes. Facilitation will be provided to maintain the conversational focus on an integral perspective.

“Senshi” means “warrior” in Japanese, and this is warrior training for your body, your mind, and your spirit. Becoming an accomplished athlete, artist, businessperson, or author requires discipline of practice. Our spiritual practice is no different.
Senshi Meditation takes seriously the idea that there is nothing more important in your life right now then waking up. Every minute spent asleep is another minute spent in bondage, in contraction, in ignorance, in servitude to old stories, patterns, and obsessions. This is a life and death practice, and we will take our seats as warriors dedicated to our path.
OVERVIEW
DETAIL
PROTOCOL
Will be explained before we seal the container of our group. Instruction will be provided for other activities at the appropriate time. No unnecessary speaking or eye contact during the hour of formal practice — this is a sacred space dedicated to our Awakening!
METHOD
Boulder, CO has many strengths, but a sharp and clear lineage of spiritual discipline, taught in an uncompromising way, is not one of them. While emotional processing, the honoring of all perspectives, and go-at-your-own pace models all serve our emerging, post-conventional selves, they can be toxic to the spiritual path. “There is a way between voice and presence where information flows. In disciplined silence it opens. With wondering talk it closes.” —Rumi
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Keith Martin-Smith began studying the Dharma in 1996, and took Red Tara Empowerment and Bodhisattva Vows with Lama Tsering Everest in 2001. In 2007 he met Jun Po Roshi and became a formal student of his, and was given the Dharma name “Ko Gen” (“Tiger Eye”). Keith/Kogen has been authorized by Jun Po Roshi to teach the Mondo Zen deconstruction/reconstruction protocol and meditation.
Kogen is also the most senior disciple and only lineage holder of Grandmaster Jeon Hoon Jeon, 3rd Generation White Tiger Master, and has been given the title of “Co-Master” in the instruction of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Qi Gong. He has been training since 1994 and teaching since 2003. His training in Kung Fu and Qi Gong is ongoing on the way to becoming a Master. He has also studied Jin Woo, Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and Jinqui Qi Gong.
“What is better, satisfying 1,000 desires or conquering one?”
INTEGRAL FRAME FOR THOSE INTERESTED
An absolutistic (Amber) frame for teaching has been used for millennia in spiritual and physical disciplines, but has been increasingly abandoned as we moved into modernity (Orange) and postmodernity (Green). But we are seeing in places like Boulder, CO, some of the problems when one throws out the Amber, hierarchical frame for teaching: namely, it is the most effective way to create change. Amber is wonderful at helping to break the body and the mind into a difficult discipline. Orange interpretations of these disciplines can focus too much on the status and ranking of the student, while Green interpretations are, among other problems, reluctant to force one kind of training and philosophy onto students. The result of the loss of Amber teaching methods applied to marital arts and spiritual practice has been a reduction in the quality of students and of their overall competency.
We can add Orange and Green emergent truths and understandings into pre-and-post practice structures, to honor the insights of those worldviews. But putting those structures into the Amber frame destroys the pressure that Amber has been so carefully formatted to create, and lengthens the entire process when it doesn’t destroy it utterly.

Here’s your chance to get up close and personal with the leading integral philosopher of our time, Ken Wilber (representing Integral Life). We are deeply honored and excited about Ken selecting Boulder Integral to make his first public appearance for a Q & A in Boulder in over four years! We hope very much that you, your friends and family will join us at this great event.
We’re especially honored to welcome our dear fried Ken to Boulder Integral; many of us here have worked closely with him, and know the warm heart beneath his amazing mind. Ken is a sparkling communicator, and a beautiful vehicle for his breakthrough worldview. Most famous of his work, the AQAL Maps, provides a comprehensive view of the nature of reality by integrating all of human wisdom — eastern and western, ancient and contemporary, scientific and spiritual — into simple, powerful maps. Ken will share some of his latest thinking on spirituality, psychology, and current events, as well as answer questions about his work and life. Don’t miss this very rare chance to see Ken in person.
Do you have a question for Ken Wilber? Send your question to nomali@boulderintegral.org. We will pass this on to Ken and try and accommodate as many questions as possible. We ask for your forgiveness in advance if your question does not get picked among the many that we are receiving.
At this event, we will explore:

“Nobody is integrating the sciences and spiritual knowledge with Wilber’s scope and integrative power.” -Michael Murphy, cofounder Esalen, author The Future of the Body and Golf in the Kingdom
About Ken
Ken Wilber is the most widely translated academic writer in America, with 25 books translated into some 30 foreign languages, and is the first philosopher-psychologist to have his Collected Works published while still alive. Wilber is an internationally acknowledged leader and the preeminent scholar of the Integral stage of human development, which continues to gather momentum around the world. His many books, all of which are still in print, can be found at Amazon.com. Some of his more popular books include Integral Spirituality; No Boundary; Grace and Grit; Sex, Ecology, Spirituality; and the “everything” books: A Brief History of Everything (one of his largest selling books) and A Theory of Everything (probably the shortest introduction to his work). Do you feel called to live a higher, juicier life? Integral is not just a level of consciousness, it is a new worldspace of insight, connection and effectiveness. Come to Boulder Integral and find out how you can bring the power of integral functioning into your life.
One of the gifts of integral functioning is that we are able to forge a radical new connection to our own destiny. As we see more deeply into the patterns of the kosmos we see more deeply into ourselves. We see our gifts more clearly and become more keenly aware of what quickens our heart. This in turn releases a yearning — indeed an imperative — to enact our unique contribution into the world.
We hope you can join this event, led by Boulder Integral co-founder, Jeff Salzman. Stay for the Stuart Davis show and party afterwards! This will be a great opportunity for you to meet with others who are also in town for the weekend workshop at Hotel Westin.

SEX, GOD, ROCK n’ ROLL: Live show and party, with Stuart Davis

Boulder’s very own integral rockstar Stuart Davis has made a genre-busting career of delving into difficult subjects as a Writer-Director-Actor-Comedian-Songwriter-Zen Practitioner and Integral Spiritualist. With his trademark synergy of sacred and profane punchlines, Stu will take you through a circus of sexuality, spirituality, and showbiz. In Stu’s Universe horny is holy, funny is profound, and Love has no opposite. Davis twists mind, body, & spirit into a hot menage ‘e trois. It’s no wonder he’s long been known as the Twisted Mystic.
“Razor sharp improv. Lurking amid the minutiae of his observations on life and the Universe are some startling insights. Davis pulls off the most elusive of party tricks… Even the gods were grinning.”
